These Swedish Meatballs are tender, flavorful, and completely gluten-free. Served in a creamy, savory sauce, they make a comforting meal perfect with mashed potatoes or rice.
Prepare the Meatballs: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, gluten-free panko, grated onion, beaten egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
Shape and Brown: Roll mixture into 1-inch meatballs. Melt 2 tbsp butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs on all sides 5-7 minutes per batch. Remove and set aside.
Make the Roux: In same skillet, melt remaining 3 tbsp butter over medium heat. Whisk in gluten-free flour and cook 1 minute to form roux.
Create the Sauce: Slowly whisk in beef broth to prevent lumps. Simmer 2-3 minutes until thickened.
Finish and Simmer: Stir in heavy cream, tamari, and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper. Return meatballs to skillet, nestle into sauce, cover, and simmer 10-15 minutes until cooked through and sauce thickened.
Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley or dill. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.
Notes
Use a combination of beef and pork for tender meatballs. Grate onion to add moisture. Ensure gluten-free flour blend contains xanthan gum for proper sauce thickening.
